About Us

I like torque!
— John Lingenfelter talking to editor Mike Magda in the early ‘90s.

orqueJournal.com is a news-oriented platform dedicated to exploring and celebrating the complicated but thrilling world of performance engine technology. Its mission is to spotlight advancements and innovations in engines used for racing and in high-performance street vehicles—and then uncover the masterminds behind those bullets. In other words, liberate the personality of race engines in addition to examining the build sheet.

The focus will be on engine builders, product engineers and other industry experts deeply involved in engine building. The goal is to provide readers of all technical backgrounds with interesting viewpoints and a deeper understanding of performance engine development and optimization.

Torque Journal is led by Mike Magda, an automotive journalist whose interest in racing engines started with a Kodak Instamatic at the 1970 AHRA Winternationals when he was just 16 and a big fan of engine builders/racers like Dick Landy. The first major race he covered for a newspaper was the 1976 IHRA World Nationals in Amarillo, Texas, and he’s been writing about the automotive performance industry as a steady gig since 1986.

He has extensive experience collaborating with some of the nation’s top engine builders and performance parts manufacturers. He has covered NASCAR, IndyCar, NHRA, World of Outlaws, IMSA, Score off-road, Dakar, Champ Boat racing and more—visiting more than 60 racing venues. Magda’s stories have appeared in Race Engine Technology, Hot Rod, Engine Technology International, Racecar Engineering, Cup Race Technology, Motor Trend, Professional Motorsports World and dozens of other automotive and general-interest publications and websites. He is the former editor of Chevy High Performance magazine and EngineLabs.com. When he gets some free time, he can be found working on his ’65 Mustang fastback or taking photos of wildlife in nearby national and state parks.
